The new 80ghz radar level gauge will be applied to more complex working conditions

2022 10/31

80 GHz radar level transmitters, compact instruments with a narrow beam for flexible installations in existing vessel openings – or even non-intrusively through plastic vessels. The transmitters` 80 GHz high frequency delivers robust, reliable measurements even in challenging environments such as those with solids. The custom microchip technology delivers fast response and extremely high sensitivity to detect even the weakest of signals. The transmitters` dependable readings reduce workers` exposure to hazardous situations: no need to climb tanks, lean out over sumps, or crawl into confined spaces to maintain instruments. As well, zero-meter blanking distance allows measurement right up to the sensor, thereby avoiding costly overfilling. And 2 mm accuracy enhances operational safety through precise measurement through the full range of the application. All this robust performance is wrapped in an IP68 submersible housing constructed of corrosion resistant PVDF.

As the bandwidth of the radar widens, the resolution of the spectrum increases and the individual targets are indicated by narrower, more accurate peaks: the bandwidth over which the frequency is modulated determines the number of different signals reflected from a target. A 24 GHz radar typically modulates between 24 and 26 GHz and thus has a bandwidth of 2 GHz, while an 80 GHz typically modulates in the range between 78 and 82 GHz and thus has a bandwidth of 4 GHz. With 4 GHz, for example, it is possible to differentiate between targets that are only 10 cm/4" apart. With 2 GHz, these cannot be distinguished under the same conditions.
